Evidence Based Hand Therapy for Treatment of Flexor and Extensor Tendon Injuries

Course Content:

The therapist’s post-operative treatment of surgically repaired flexor and extensor tendons is the focus of this two-day course. Tendon anatomy, physiology, and the physiology of healing will be reviewed. Therapists will be introduced to evidence-based post-operative protocols for tendon treatment and the clinical reasoning that guides a therapist’s choice of protocols. In groups, therapists will be presented with examples of hand patients with tendon injuries and identify programs to treat them.

Due to COVID 19,  this course is now offered as an online course. What this means for you:

  • You will be able to attend the course from the comfort and safety of your own home using a computer or tablet.
  • The course will take place, using the zoom online platform, on Friday and Saturday, February 26-27, from 8:30 to 16:30
  • The Zoom platform allows for interaction, you can see, hear, and speak with the instructors and other participants during the course.
  • A course manual and written materials for group discussion will be sent to you via regular mail prior to the course, during the course, you can take notes in the manuals and refer to the written materials provided.
  • Fabrication of the splints used in flexor tendon rehabilitation will be demonstrated via video and we will discuss this during the course.
  • Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of participation sent you via post.

Course Language:

This course will be taught in English. Question and answer sessions in English and Italian.

At the end of the course participants:

  • Understand tendon anatomy and biomechanics and the role it plays in recovery
  • Understand tendon physiology and tendon healing processes
  • Will be familiar with multiple protocols for the treatment of flexor and extensor tendon injuries
  • Be familiar with the process of  fabricating a thermoplastic splint for the post-operative treatment of a flexor tendon (video demonstration and discussion)
  • Be able to select a post-operative treatment program to fit the needs of their patient

  • Have a tablet or computer to attend the course
